Peradeniya Botanical Sanctuary

The Peradeniya Botanical Sanctuary, commonly known as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, is the largest and most famous botanical garden in Sri Lanka.
It is located about 5 km west of Kandy, along the banks of the Mahaweli River.
The gardens were first developed as a royal pleasure garden during the Kandyan Kingdom and later expanded by the British in the 19th century.

Covering around 60 hectares, the sanctuary is home to more than 4,000 species of plants, including a remarkable collection of orchids, palms, medicinal plants, and flowering trees. With its wide lawns, shaded avenues, and rich biodiversity, Peradeniya Botanical Sanctuary serves as an important center for plant conservation, education, and tourism, as well as a peaceful recreational space for visitors.
