The Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Mountain Range is a major mountain massif located in central Sri Lanka, mainly within the districts of Matale and Kandy. It gets its name from its shape, as several of its peaks resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist. The range forms part of the Central Highlands and is recognized for its outstanding natural beauty and ecological importance.

The Knuckles Mountain Range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to a wide variety of ecosystems, including cloud forests, grasslands, and river valleys. It supports many endemic species of plants and animals found only in Sri Lanka. The area is also an important watershed, giving rise to several rivers. Today, the Knuckles Range is valued for biodiversity conservation, scientific research, and eco-tourism activities such as trekking and nature study.
