Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic)
Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is one of the most sacred Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka.
It is located in the city of Kandy and is respected by Buddhists all over the world. The temple houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which has been preserved and worshipped for many centuries.
The Sacred Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD during the reign of King Kirthi Sri Meghavarna. Over time, the relic was kept in several ancient capitals before finally being enshrined in Kandy.
The present temple complex was built and developed by Kandyan kings and reflects traditional Sri Lankan architecture and culture.
Sri Dalada Maligawa is not only a religious center but also an important historical and cultural monument. Every year, thousands of local and foreign devotees visit the temple to pay their respects.
The famous Esala Perahera, a grand religious procession held in Kandy, is closely associated with the temple and attracts visitors from around the world. Sri Dalada Maligawa stands as a symbol of faith, heritage, and national pride of Sri Lanka.
